— La'NA'

The past several weeks we’ve been watching Mother Nature at her best, which included the arrival of triplets!

With the first signs of spring, we discovered a robin’s nest cradled in the branches of Carolina jasmine that intertwine our front porch.  One beautiful robin’s blue egg lay alone in the nest soon followed by a second and finally a third.  A birds-eye view from our living room window provides great entertainment as well as communing with nature.  All along, mama and daddy robin have become used to my peeking into the nest to see their tiny featherless babies sleeping, not to mention the photos taken of the care and patience of the parents as they guard and feed their young. In their first week, they have now doubled in size and are covered in feathers.  It’s an usually crisp and breezy late spring time, and on days when the wind is blowing, mama robin sits on her young to prevent them falling from their nest.

Recently, we spent an afternoon with our grandnieces. We enjoyed being in their environment and planting a vegetable garden for their family.  Our senior, four-legged family member, Jessie, relaxed in the comfort of her chaise under a tall shade tree while basking in the attention she was given by both Amberlyn and Sarah.

The girls are always entertaining and engaging with their conversations that sometimes catch me by surprise.   As Amberlyn sat with Jessie petting her head, she said, “Jessie is lucky to have you for her mom.”  I wondered what was going through her mind.

Moms are extraordinary people.  Like mama robin, your day is filled protecting, nurturing and feeding as you, too, give your young their wings.  However, while our little robins will soon take flight and make their way in nature, you are Mom forever and always.

You give yet rarely give thought to how you do all that you do in nurturing a child’s  foundation, displaying the countless ways in which you offer love—not only for your child, but for another’s child; not only to a young child, but to a grown child.  Love weaves in, through and around the hearts of everyone you touch leaving its mark to be passed on to another.

And, what was going through Amberlyn’s mind?  She later told me that Jessie has a good mom because I’m a good person.  When I reminded Amberlyn that she has a really special mom, she said her mom is special because she takes care of her and is a good person, too.

Love is You.  In this season set aside for celebrating Moms and Mothers of many, may you wrap yourself in love as well as you give your love away.
